Nazareth Hospital Launches Emergency Department Residency Program

Northeast Philadelphia — (September 10, 2020): Nazareth Hospital launched its new three-year Emergency Department Residency Program in July, welcoming six residents to further their graduate medical education.

Kanika Gupta, MD, oversees the residency as the Residency Program Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Gupta is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has several years of experience in emergency medicine.

"Our goal for the program is to train people who want to practice emergency medicine in a community setting," said Charmaine Chan, DO, Nazareth Hospital Designated Institutional Official & Osteopathic Program Director. "These residents will get the chance to connect to our community and learn how to provide compassionate care for many different types of emergencies."

Nazareth received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to launch this new program in September of 2019 and then immediately started the interview process. Over the next three years, the program will enroll a total of 18 Emergency Department residents, learning not only in the ED, but also in the ICU, and they will rotate at other medical centers with pediatrics and obstetrics units to train for other kinds of emergencies.
