2018 Nonprofit Summit

2018 Nonprofit Summit

 presented by

GNPCC Nonprofit Summit

In partnership with The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University's School of Business

This event is designed to answer the fundamental question of “What do for-profit companies want from nonprofit partners?”   With nonprofits doing important work in their communities, it’s those organizations that are able to address that question skillfully and emphatically while creating mutually beneficial relationships.  As corporate philanthropy has changed in recent years, with countless corporate mergers and restructuring and emphasis on employee engagement, it is increasingly essential for nonprofits who are seeking connections with businesses to change and adapt their approaches and offerings.

We will be joined by five corporate representatives who will share their experiences collaborating with nonprofit organizations.  They will share the factors that are important to them in selecting a partner and what they expect.   Along the way, we’ll better understand where nonprofits may go wrong in their pursuit of corporate partnerships, the role of brand alignment, the importance of doing your homework, what is reasonable to expect from both parties and how to design the relationships so that they work to the benefit of both parties.

Meet the Panel:

Clare McKenna, Project Manager, Inverse Paradox
Dana Rusikoff, co-Founder and Business Leader for SureShade
John Fleming, owner, K12.IT

Rod Sandmeyer, President, Sandmeyer Steel

Meet the Facilitators:

Joan Mintz Ulmer

Joan Mintz Ulmer is a communications and fundraising professional who has spent her career in service to nonprofit causes.  She has directed the public relations, marketing, communications and development functions for such organizations as the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey and Women Against Abuse.  Her current position as director of marketing & communications for The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University’s School of Business, involves development of all printed materials, media relations and digital presence, in support of the extensive educational programs, consulting services and leadership development activities for the largest and most comprehensive capacity-building organization for nonprofits in the Greater Philadelphia region.

Laura Otten, PH.D.

Laura has been director of The Nonprofit Center at LaSalle University’s School of Business, a management support organization that enhances the management and governance capacity of nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, since 2001.  A Nonprofit Center consultant and instructor since 1985, Laura served as director of evaluation and research, prior to becoming director.  In 2013, she developed and became the first director of La Salle University’s Master’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership, and is an associate professor.
She has since led The Nonprofit Center in developing innovative and expanded programs to meet changing community needs, raising quality standards, and fostering the development of applied research on nonprofit management issues.   Laura also continues to work in the areas of board development, succession planning, and coaching directly with clients.
Laura also served as director of La Salle’s Criminal Justice Program and its Women's Studies Program and Project on Justice and Society.  She gained tenure in 1988 and has been recognized for distinguished teaching.  Laura has several publishing credits, including the book, Women’s Rights and the Law (Praeger, 1993).
Laura received her Ph.D. in Sociology and her M.A. in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania and her B.A. in Sociology from Sarah Lawrence College.
Her weekly blog, Nonprofit University (nonprofituniversityblog.org), is read in over 155 countries.

Leo Otting
As part of a partnership with the Dow Chemical Company, Leo Otting joined the staff of The Nonprofit Center in 2015 to manage the Dow Corps volunteer program. He leverages Dow employees in the Delaware Valley to realize Dow’s goals of community involvement and corporate volunteerism while harnessing these volunteer efforts to deliver on the mission of nonprofit partners. Leo is passionate about helping individuals find their purpose through volunteerism, which led to several experiences developing the capacity of volunteer programs for a number of organizations—mainly dealing with gardening; his other passion. Illustrating this, Leo spent three years in Madagascar with the Peace Corps working with Missouri Botanical Gardens and the Lutheran Church of Madagascar. He also spent two years with AmeriCorps at the YWCA Family Center in Columbus, OH, as well as two years assisting Technology for the Poor, an international organization in Columbus.

Lori C. Moffa

Lori Moffa is the Director of Consulting for The Nonprofit Center at LaSalle University’s School of Business.  Lori’s appreciation and understanding of the role of the consultant stems from her own extensive experience as a consultant to a variety of nonprofits and as a professional whose role has been to work with groups of consultants. For over 20 years Lori has worked in the nonprofit sector in a variety of roles.  At United Way of King County, Seattle, she recruited and managed a corps of consultants, including some volunteer, to provide technical assistance and training to nonprofit organizations.
During her many years in Philadelphia nonprofits, Lori has worked for the United Way of Gloucester County determining community needs, reviewing funding applications and distributing funds to area organizations, and as a fundraising professional for the Philadelphia Zoo, Mercy Health System,  and the Arthritis Foundation.
One of her most significant career accomplishments was the founding of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s Nonprofit Council in 1995. Lori spent 8 years at the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in various roles eventually producing educational programming for small business owners and employees.  In these roles she noticed there was nothing addressing the unique needs of the Chamber’s significant number of nonprofit members.  The Nonprofit Council was created to educate and assist this unique group.
As the Director of Consulting at The Nonprofit Center, Lori is responsible for recruiting and managing a network of over 40 consultants and interim executive directors.  She also matches the consultants with organizations in need of technical assistance and manages all aspects of these engagements.  "You make a living by what you get...But you make a life by what you give,"  -Winston Churchill
